Renault resumes export of auto parts to Iranian market

According to Reuters, Renault Automobile has announced that the company has resumed the export of auto parts to Iran and expects that its local auto assembly business will achieve a rapid increase in the first half of this year.

Reno’s head of Asia Pacific Gilles Normand said in an interview a few days ago that as the international community has recently eased the economic and trade blockade against Iran, the company has resumed the export of parts and components for this market, but the scale of the current export is still very low.

“It is important that we can gradually restart the parts supply and payment process for vehicle production,” Gilles Normand said. “We have a window of opportunity in the next six months.”

Iran was once Renault’s eighth largest single market in the world. In 2012, the company sold a total of 100,783 cars in the local market, occupying approximately 10% of the market share. With the strengthening of Iran’s economic sanctions against Iran, Renault was forced to suspend all shipments of Iranian-origin exports on July 1st last year.

Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn said late last month that after the international community gradually resumes trade with Iran, the local passenger vehicle market is expected to soar to 100 to 1.5 million vehicles. As French brands have been popular in Iran, the relaxation of economic sanctions will also benefit Renault.
