Positron emission tomography (PET) is currently the most advanced nuclear medicine imaging device and has been widely used in medical diagnosis, drug development and basic research. It uses positron-labeled radiopharmaceuticals to trace physiological or biochemical processes in living organisms, and non-invasively obtain functional information in vivo through tomographic imaging. Small PET is specifically designed for small animal experiments. Since animal experiments occupy a very important position in biomedical research, new drugs and treatment methods need to be first carried out on animals, so small PET has broad application prospects.
Small animals are much smaller than human bodies, so the main indicators such as spatial resolution of small PET are much higher than human PET, which greatly increases the difficulty of small PET development. In the project development process, it is necessary to master and solve many technical problems such as solid-state detectors, low-noise analog electronics, and high-speed parallel data acquisition. In order to achieve high resolution, the project team used the LSO crystal array coupled position sensitive PMT detector technology scheme based on the full investigation of international development trends. In the electronic system, mainstream technologies such as pipeline analog-to-digital conversion, LVDS serial output, FPGA data processing, position energy LUT remote download, unified clock distribution, and TCP/IP data transmission are adopted to ensure system speed and stability.

China's first small positron emission tomography (PET) was successfully developed at High Energy. The preliminary experimental results show that the technical indicators basically meet the design requirements. The project was jointly funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' knowledge innovation equipment and equipment development project and the High Energy Institute's knowledge innovation project.
