Silicon electrodes bring greater battery capacity

If battery life increases, our portable devices will benefit. Unfortunately, the current lithium-ion battery (LIB) has almost reached its limit, and the only way to increase the power is to produce a larger battery. There is hardly a viable solution that can lead to a lighter, more compact battery.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory came up with a way to increase the power of lithium-ion batteries, which is said to have at least doubled the energy storage of ordinary laptop batteries. This method requires the use of spongy silicon as the electrode. In simple terms, spongy silicon is a piece of silicon for perforation. When lithium ions are absorbed, it is no longer necessary to expand outwards, but silicon increases its mass through the filled pores. And its expansion limit is 30%, which is based on the silicon electrode at an energy concentration of 750 milliamperes per gram, which is about twice that of the graphite electrode. In addition, the silicon electrode has been proven to be flexible, and the prototype battery will retain 80% capacity after 1000 charges.
The next goal of the lab is to build a larger prototype that is similar in size to the mainstream power of mobile devices. At the same time, they are waiting to cooperate with technology companies to develop and commercialize production.
